Integrity issue
A 4 inch GRE (Fiberbond 20FR16-C) fire water main section of pipework was leaking from two joints. It was proposed to reinstate the integrity of the pipework and provide a leak sealing solution by applying a Futurewrap composite repair. The leaks were initially sealed using a water activated temporary repair.
Design
The design of the Futurewrap repair was according to ISO 24817. The design approach was for the composite repair to strengthen the pipework without allowance for any remaining GRE material and also seal the through wall (fully circumferential) defect. The design parameters were; pipework material GRE, internal pressure 16 bar, temperature 930C, design lifetime 20 years. The repair design thickness was 18 mm (22 layers) of Futurewrap Glass/LT composite repair with an axial length of 1500 mm.
Installation
The installation steps are shown in the photographs from surface preparation through to final curing. The surface preparation was ST3. Full QA/QC measurements were made to
demonstrate that the Futurewrap repair was applied in accordance with ISO 24817.
Summary
A 4 inch GRE fire water mains was suffering from leaking joints was repaired using a Futurewrap Glass/LT composite repair. The repair was completed within 6 days.
