CASE STUDIES

12 inch vent gas line with fire protection

About the project

Integrity issue

A 12 inch vent gas line had suffered external  corrosion to such an extent that the remaining  wall thickness was little over 1 mm. It was  proposed to reinstate the integrity of the  pipework and provide a leak sealing solution  by applying a Futurewrap composite repair. A  further constraint on the composite repair  design was that an H60 fire rating was  required.

Design

The design of the Futurewrap repair for pressure  containment was according to ISO 24817. The  design approach was for the composite repair  to strengthen the pipework without allowance  for any remaining steel and also seal the  through wall defect. The design parameters  were; pipework material carbon steel, internal  pressure 14 bar, temperature 200C, design  lifetime 20 years. The repair design thickness was 8 mm (10 layers) of Futurewrap Glass/LT composite repair with an axial length of 8500 mm.

Summary

A 12 inch vent line suffering external corrosion  was repaired using a Futurewrap Glass/LT composite repair for pressure containment and  a Futurewrap Fire composite repair for an H60  fire rating. The combined repair was completed  within 15 days.
